Antipsychotics have Federal Drug Administration Black Box Warnings of causing early death in patients with dementia. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has strict regulations regarding the use of antipsychotics in nursing facilities. Still, residents have behaviors that can be harmful to themselves, staff, or other residents. Non-pharmacological interventions have not been effective. Are there medications other than antipsychotics which are effective for agitation, aggression, and anxiety? Yes!

At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the difference in first-generation antipsychotics and second-generation antipsychotics
  2. Understand the research on medications other than antipsychotics which can be useful for agitation, aggression, and anxiety
  3. Recognize the benefits and risks of medications for agitation, aggression, and anxiety

This webinar is appropriate for administrators, directors of nursing, nurse managers, nursing, social services, medical directors, and activity directors in nursing and assisted living facilities.
